# 1998 Liberty Pattern

The original one-ounce silver piece, with the word "PATTERN" on its reverse, was minted at the Royal Hawaiian Mint, marking the birth of the Liberty Dollar. 

According to Ron Goodger at the [Liberty Dollar Encyclopedia](https://sites.google.com/site/libertydollarencyclopedia/10-base-1-oz-silver?ref=norfed.info), only 20 of these pieces were believed to have been struck. The website that sold them stated that there were only 12 of the original minted. Over the years, some were either given away or sold, and a few came with a Certificate of Authenticity. The design was created by Bernard von NotHaus, who also submitted it to the U.S. Treasury as a contender for the new dollar design.

To commemorate the 20th anniversary of the original in 2018, 100 pieces were re-issued and minted from the original dies. However, unlike the original with reeded edges, these had smooth edges and were numbered on the side from 1 to 100\. These were sold for $150 on [this site (archived link)](https://web.archive.org/web/20190913101537/http://liberty-dollar-20th-anniversary.mybigcommerce.com/1998-2018-commemorative-pattern-liberty-dollar-re-issue/) and came in a box with a Certificate of Authenticity.

There were 12 original pieces and all were struck on a 39mm diameter, 1 troy ounce .999 silver planchet. They are extremely rare.
