Liberty Dollar Encyclopedia
The Liberty Dollar Encyclopedia is an amazing resource of Liberty Dollar information created and maintained by former RCO Ron Goodger. His work has kept information about Liberty Dollar centralized. If able, I encourage all who see this to Visit and Donate to help keep his site up and running.
This page is solely for educational purposes and I will try to use my own images wherever possible to document the different types of Liberty Dollars contained in the Liberty Dollar Encyclopedia. Due to the scarcity of some of the pieces, I will use other images under the fair use doctrine and cite the original sources that own the copyrights.
This is still a work in progress, as my time is quite limited these days - so check back often!

#2.5 1998/1999 Double Date Type II (Discovered by Sterling Ward - December 2021)
Numbers 2 and 3 are classified as Type I, while pieces 1 and 4 are classified as Type II.
Sterling Ward identified another rare variation now categorized as Type II. The differences between the two are subtle and can be challenging to spot unless the pieces are compared side by side. Specific features help distinguish between them.
The most noticeable difference is in the ear design. Type II has a taller, narrower ear, while Type I features a shorter, broader ear. The head on Type II is slightly larger than that on Type I. The mirror finish also differs, with Type II having a satin-like finish similar to the #0 pattern piece, and Type I featuring a standard mirror finish like the #1 piece. Collectors can determine the type by using a caliper micrometer to measure the distance from the tip of the crown to the bottom left corner of the neck.
It appears the obverse die used for the #1 piece was also used for the #2 (Type I), while the die from the #0 pattern piece was reused for the #2.5 (Type II). This may have occurred when the die for the #1 and #2 pieces began to show wear, leading to the decision to use an existing die from the pattern pieces produced in Hawaii.
