Two (2) Oz. Piedfort

In 2004, BVNH introduced the 2 oz Piedfort $20 Liberty Dollar. These pieces were designed with the same 39 mm diameter as the standard one-ounce Liberty Dollars, but with double the thickness. That thickness is what gave them their $20 face value, which makes sense as the one ounce pieces had a face value of $10.
Each 2 oz Piedfort was sold encapsulated in an airtite holder. They came in two main types: one stamped “UNCIRCULATED” on the edge, and another stamped with individual serial numbers. The word “UNCIRCULATED” and the serial numbers were engraved directly into an un-reeded part of the edge, which was plenty wide enough to allow for this.

Serial Numbered

Two other types were also known to have been produced (and included in the Coin Catalogs in the LD Books) - one with the serial number “00000” and another hallmarked by BVNH, using his stamp with triangle symbol with a circle and the letter “B.” At least 20 examples with the “00000” serial have been observed, confirming it was used on more than one Piedfort.

The UNCIRCULATED version was distributed in a purple velvet bag that attracts a lot of dust, lint, and hair. The serial numbered pieces came in royal blue jeweler’s boxes with white interiors. The numbered version was produced in smaller quantities, believed to be ~1,000 though there may be a similar number of uncirculated.
